About Us

Hansons Fabrics and Crafts is one of the largest fabric warehouses in the South of England. We have thousands of metres of fabrics ranging from curtaining to organza and linen to fleece as well as our craft department, catering for every hobby from patchwork & quilting to card-making, we have something for everyone. It’s safe to say that Hansons has come a long way since first opening in 1982 in my garden shed.

I am Myra Hanson, and from a young age, I have always had a passion for sewing, crafts and knitting! It was that passion that drove me to open my own fabric and haberdashery shop, which fitted in with my young family at the time and was the perfect solution to all my own sewing needs. My garden shed was kitted out with shelves and a cutting table and the deliveries from suppliers started rolling in! I found that I was fulfilling a real need within my local community, and it wasn’t long before my stocks started to outgrow my modest space. The search for my first warehouse began.

18 months later, Hansons Fabrics and Crafts opened its doors in the Dorset country town of Sturminster Newton, where I had a small warehouse on the local industrial estate. This was where I set out to provide everything and anything you could need or want to sew; fabrics to suit all seasons and more haberdashery than you could think of. Soon after opening, we introduced Sewing Machines to our stocks and offered what is still to this day, our unbeaten After Care Service. People started to come to me from far and wide for not only my material or machines, but my knowledge too! And with that, we kept growing.

Once again, Hansons was on the hunt for a larger warehouse and we ended up where we are today, Station Road, in the heart of the town. At Hansons, we always do our best to help where we can with our own individual skills and questions began flooding in about whether we do ‘lessons’. It was from there that the Hansons Sewing School was born and our Spring and Autumn Workshops took hold. Our Workshops cover a wide spectrum of techniques and projects, ranging from ‘Curtain Making for Beginners’ to ‘Make Your Own Lingerie’. There is undoubtedly something for everyone! And now it’s even easier to book a space with our Booking Form available to print out at home!

Stocks grew even more with the larger warehouse and the introduction of the Hansons Sewing School. Our Knitting wool department followed shortly after. I’ve always had a love of knitting and crochet, from being taught how to crochet by my grandmother at the age of 14 and then teaching myself how to knit at 18, and like most of my staff and customers, we all find knitting therapeutic. Here at Hansons, we are renowned for our vast selection of knitting yarns and patterns! You’ll be able to find exactly what you want as well as all the help you need to get you started with some of our Free Knitting Patterns!

As well as our Free Knitting Patterns, we also have Free Craft Patterns and Instructions in our Sewing Machine Department where we create seasonal displays and demonstrations. We always aim to inspire our customers with our craft displays and do our up most to make sure you go away with everything you need to create it yourself. From Santa Bunting templates to creating your own hanging Yo-Yo Christmas tree, we’ve got everything covered this Christmas at Hansons!
