I have always loved sewing. Crafts and sewing have been a lifelong hobby for me. It was back in 1982, so frustrated by difficulties in obtaining the fabrics that I wished to purchase for my hobby, that I decided to have a go myself in a small way. I sourced suppliers of fabrics and haberdashery, fitted my garden shed with shelves and a cutting table and Hansons Fabrics was born. My family was still young so I opened part time to accommodate them.
However, I quickly came to realise that I was fulfilling a real need in the community. Many more people than I envisaged sewed. My stocks outgrew the garden shed and so much larger premises were required. Eighteen months later, Hansons moved to a small warehouse on the industrial estate at Sturminster Newton.
Together with a nucleus of staff gleaned from my customers I set about providing everything you need to sew, fabrics to suit all seasons and occasions, interlinings and all the haberdashery you could think of under one roof. Sewing machines were added to my stocks and we started to service and repair customer’s sewing machines. I became known for friendly and helpful service (I’m a natural chatterbox). People started visiting our small market town simply because Hanson’s was here. Customers mentioned that they had travelled from as far as East Sussex, Swindon and Cornwall and Cumbria just to see Hansons. I heard a few people say that they had moved to the Sturminster Newton area simply because of Hansons. And still we keep growing.
Once again I was on the move. This time to the larger light and airy Warehouse here at Station Road.
I have always enjoyed chatting to our customers about sewing and helping everyone with their sewing problems, when my expertise allows. So when many people said “Why don’t you teach people to sew” I thought “Why not?” I do not consider myself a proficient teacher, but I know a number of people who are excellent tutors. Thus Hansons Sewing School was born. And Hansons once again fulfilled a need.
Hansons has come a long way since I opened my garden shed in 1982. We now sell a comprehensive range of Sewing Machines to suit every purse and requirement. Added to this is a comprehensive range of haberdashery. Did you know that we stock over 2000 buttons, 900 beads and sequins, 700 ribbons and braids, 1500 reels of thread, 900 zips, 300 books, and 4000 patterns. Along with over 100 knitting wools, Hansons offer paints, dyes, craft cards, cutting boards, cutting knives, embroidery threads and wools and a host of haberdashery.
In other words, Hansons sell everything you need to sew.
