Advice on the various needles and threads available, how to use straight, stretch, zig-zag and satin stitches for standard and decorative sewing. Machine Quilting Friday 27th January 2012 with Mary Bird Machine quilting can be as subtle or as bold as you choose to make it. You will learn skills that will enable you to give depth to patchwork and applique or to create beautiful quilted heirloom pieces. We begin by practising quilting in the ditch, outline quilting and other useful patterns, progressing to free-machine quilting in order to create lovely flowing designs and interesting stippled backgrounds. At the end of the workshop you will take home a portfolio of samples that will become an invaluable reference file. ‘Tagliatelle’ Tote Bag Thursday 2nd February, 2012 with Amy Langford Everybody has loved this technique, and we have received lots of requests to make a larger bag. Amy has kindly obliged by designing a ‘tote’ bag which can hold all the essential items we need for the day! Narrow strips of random-dyed fabrics are machine stitched to a background fabric; this is then used to create the bag which is fully lined. All materials and equipment will be provided. Knitting Techniques Intarsia Knitting Friday 9th February 2012 with Jean Marshall This workshop is suitable for those who are confirdent with using stocking stitch but who want to use a variety of colours for simple intarsia and fairisle technbiques. Celtic Appliqué Friday 10th February 2012 with Mary Bird Using narrow strips of fabric to recreate the distinctive interlaced knot work patterns associated with Celtic designs. A sewing machine stitch that gives the illusion of hand applique is used to sew the strips in place. The result a beautiful appliqué panel suitable for use as a cushion cover or small wall hanging. Understanding Your Overlocker Monday 13th February, 2012 with Ena Hicks Learn how versatile your overlocker can be. Ena will begin with the basics, threading up and tension adjusting, moving on to decorative finishes and time saving techniques. This work- shop is aimed at 4-thread overlockers with adjustable tension dials. Please bring your overlocker, handbook and accessories. “Batik Lanterns” Scrap Quilt Thursday 16th February 2012 with Amy Langford Amy was inspired by Lynne Edwards' Magic Lantern lap quilt that appeared in a quilters' diary she had been given. Lantern blocks are quickly assembled using strip piecing methods, rotary cutting equipment and a sewing macine. Materials and equipment will be provided. Basic sewing machine skills are required. Big Girls Shoe Bag Thursday 8th March 2012 with Amy Langford Another fun, but practical patchwork bag from Amy. The shoulder bag is quilted and has a deep pocket. The pieced squares are machine appliquéd with a selection of fabulous shoes (Imelda Marcos would be envious!) before being assembled and machine quilted. Basic sewing machine skills required. Transparent Cut Work Friday 23rd March 2012 with Mary Bird A machine stitched technique that involves trapping layers of organza between water soluble film. The design is revealed by cutting away some of the sheer fabrics to reveal hidden colours underneath and using a soldering iron to burn away other parts of the design. Redwork Cushion Tuesday 1st May 2012 with Annette Bolton This technique was very popular towards the last quarter of the 19th century, and has been enthusiastically re-discovered over the past few years. Simple stitching techniques and the use of a variety of red threads re-employed to bring the naοve country motifs to life. There will be an opportunity to make up some of these designs for the front of a cushion, using a variety of stitches, embellished with beads and buttons. Materials and equipment will be provided.
