Know Your Sewing Machine Thursday 10th January 2013 with Lynn Horniblow Students will be shown how to maintain their machine. Advice on the various needles and threads available, how to use straight, stretch, zig-zag and satin stitches for standard and decorative sewing. The use of presser feet for quilting, roll and blind hemming, over-edging, zip application, piping and button holes. Machine Quilting Friday 11th January 2013 with Mary Bird Machine quilting can be as subtle or as bold as you choose to make it. You will learn skills that will enable you to give depth to patchwork and appliqué or to create beautiful quilted heirloom pieces. We begin by practising quilting in the ditch, outline quilting and other useful patterns, progressing to free-machine quilting in order to create lovely flowing designs and interesting stippled backgrounds. At the end of the workshop you will take home a portfolio of samples that will become an invaluable reference file. Understanding Your Overlocker Monday 14th January 2013 with Ena Hicks Learn how versatile your overlocker can be. Ena will begin with the basics, threading up and tension adjusting, moving on to decorative finishes and time saving techniques. This workshop is aimed at 4-thread overlockers with adjustable tension dials. Please bring your overlocker, handbook and accessories. Foundation Piecing Friday 18th January 2013 with Mary Bird Create beautiful machine pieced blocks without the need for templates. The foundation method of construction ensures accurate piecing and perfect points every time. Practice a variety of patterns, or start making a series of blocks that could be combined into a cushion cover, throw or quilt. Materials and equipment will be provided. Ena will show you how to measure correctly, adjust a commercial pattern and make a toile that will be fitted on you to help ensure your trousers are a comfortable fit. Etui Box Friday 1st February 2013 with Mary Bird An Etui is a small, decorative box usually used to hold needlework supplies. The sides fold down and smaller boxes nest within the large box. The smallest box in the centre holds your thimble. This little box will help keep your sewing equipment organized and handy. In Victorian times, the lady of the house would attach one to her chatelaine to carry scissors and other small items. Materials and equipment will be provided. Fee - £44.00
Origami Fabric Flowers Monday 4th February 2013 with Lynn Horniblow These small three dimensional fabric flowers can be used to enhance many of your needlework projects. Based on origami ideas including pleating, folding and gathering; we will be using both hand and machine techniques. By the end of the workshop you will have produced several samples to take home. ‘Tagliatelle’ Tote Bag Thursday 7th February 2013 with Amy Langford Everybody has loved this technique, and we have received lots of requests to make a larger bag. Amy has kindly obliged by designing a ‘tote’ bag which can hold all the essential items we need for the day! Narrow strips of random-dyed fabrics are machine stitched to a background fabric; this is then used to create the bag, which is fully lined. All materials and equipment will be provided. Indian Stitching: Tuesday 26th February 2013 with Tig Rawling In Asia it is common to have a bag, or wrap, to protect precious books. Crazy Patchwork Flower Bag Monday 11th March 2013 with Lynn Horniblow A new look at a Victorian patchwork technique; but using stitches on the sewing machine to create the ‘crazy patchwork’. ‘Trad Jazz’ Lap Quilt Thursday 14th March 2013 with Amy Langford A welcome return to an ‘old favourite’, this Australian technique combines crazy patchwork with stained glass appliqué using a ‘mix’ of pretty pastel batik fabrics with stunning results. Introduction to Rag Rugs Tuesday 19th March 2013 with Daphne Aish An introduction to hand hooked rugs - learn a little of the history of this ancient craft as well as the techniques of hooking and prodding. Knitting Techniques: including Frills And Lace Friday 22nd March 2013 with Jean Marshall This workshop is all about finishing off your work so that it remains looking wonderful for as long as possible. It is suitable for those who want to improve the quality of their finished work; we will cover simple techniques for sewing up and how to block and press correctly. Jean will also show you how to create some simple lace and frilled edgings. ‘Batik Lanterns’ Lap Quilt Thursday 11th April 2013 with Amy Langford Amy was inspired by Lynne Edwards’ Magic Lantern lap quilt that appeared in a quilters’ diary she had been given. Coffee/Lunch Bag Thursday 18th April 2013 with Annette Bolton A small, practical bag for carrying your cup and lunch on outings or workshops. Transparent Cut Work Friday 19th April 2013 with Mary Bird A machine stitched technique that involves trapping layers of organza between water soluble film. The design is revealed by cutting away some of the sheer fabrics to reveal hidden colours underneath and using a soldering iron to burn away other parts of the design. You will need a knowledge of free machine embroidery. Please bring your sewing machine and accessories, all other equipment and materials will be provided. Fee - £44.00

Elizabethan Embroidery Tuesday 23rd April 2013 with Beppy Berlin Elizabethan embroidery was the result of the Elizabethan needle women’s pleasure in the flowers and plants grown around them and the exotic species brought back from countries faraway.
