Machine Quilting

Machine quilting can be as subtle or as bold as you choose to make it. You will learn skills that will enable you to give depth to patchwork and applique or to create beautiful quilted heirloom pieces. We begin by practising quilting in the ditch, outline quilting and other useful patterns, progressing to free-machine quilting in order to create lovely flowing designs and interesting stippled backgrounds. At the end of the workshop you will take home a portfolio of samples that will become an invaluable reference file. You will need to bring your Sewing machine and accessories, but all other equipment and materials will be provided.

‘Tagliatelle’ Tote Bag

Everybody has loved this technique, and we have received lots of requests to make a larger bag. Amy has kindly obliged by designing a ‘tote’ bag which can hold all the essential items we need for the day! Narrow strips of random-dyed fabrics are machine stitched to a background fabric; this is then used to create the bag which is fully lined. All materials and equipment will be provided. Celtic Appliqué

Using narrow strips of fabric to recreate the distinctive interlaced knot work patterns associated with Celtic designs. “Batik Lanterns” Scrap Quilt

Transparent Cut Work

A machine stitched technique that involves trapping layers of organza between water soluble film. The design is revealed by cutting away some of the sheer fabrics to reveal hidden colours underneath and using a soldering iron to burn away other parts of the design. This technique was very popular towards the last quarter of the 19th century, and has been enthusiastically re-discovered over the past few years. Simple stitching techniques and the use of a variety of red threads re-employed to bring the naοve country motifs to life.
